【History of the product】

Wood inlay is a traditional technique in which various types of trees are cut along a pattern and then inlaid onto a single piece of wood to create a picture or design.

It is produced following the production method of Kanagawa Prefecture's traditional craft "Hakone wood inlay".

It has been produced in Hakone since 1889.

 【Features and Design】

The design is a distorted picture of an ukiyoe painting from the collection of One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai.

It depicts a rising dragon breaking through dark clouds as it climbs towards heaven (Mt. Fuji). Mt. Fuji is depicted in the fortuitous shade of red.

The purpose of depicting Mt. Fuji and a dragon is their pronunciation in Japanese.

The word for unexpectedness (不時) is also pronounced 'fuji', whereas the word for dragon 'Tatsu' (龍) has the same pronunciation as the word (断つ) meaning to sever, remove or end. Combined it implies to remove the unexpected" or consequently "to end unhappiness.

" Thus, it is interpreted to be an auspicious painting for having this meaning embedded within its imagery. "

Five materials are used: walnut, hoe, mizuki, satine, and kusu.
